The Famous Mela of Uttarakhnad | Gend Mela Dadamandi

 Uttarakhand is well-known for keeping alive its traditional celebrations and cultural practices. They celebrate folk festivals that wake up their gods and honour their cultural heritage. These events are not just local affairs; they attract people from around the world, making the region's culture even more colourful.

Gindi Mela Dadamandi

One special festival is the Gindi Fair in Dadamandi, Uttarakhand. It happens on Makar Sankranti, a day celebrated in different ways across India. In Dadamandi, they play a game called Gindi, similar to rugby but with no strict rules. The Gindi Fair in Dadamandi is famous, and there's a belief that even if seven people die during the game, it's forgiven. Thalnadi, another place, also has a popular Gindi Fair where up to five deaths are forgiven.

Gindi is a ball game played with a  10 kg leather ball. The ball is made from the skin of an animal that died in a nearby village. The game is between two teams, Bhatpuri and Languri, who fiercely compete to push the ball to their side.

History of Gindi Mela

The Gindi Fair tradition started in Thalnadi, and it's a story about a clash between villagers over a girl named Gidori. This led to an ongoing competition between two teams, and people from different villages came to watch this fair even today.

In addition to Dadamandi and Thalnadi, Gindi is played in Tyado and Kimsari among married and unmarried individuals. There's also a Gindi fair in Bilkhet (Sanguda) near Satpuli. Overall, these Gindi fairs bring a lot of excitement to Uttarakhand's culture, attracting visitors who want to experience something unique and interesting.
